The top holdings of many ESG funds may be surprisingly familiar. ESG funds also tend to be more heavily invested in technology stocks because the sector is one of the "cleaner" industries, according to former VettaFi financial futurist Dave Nadig. But Noack considers the idea that ESG funds only invest in clean, sustainable sectors as misleading. Global ESG funds saw their first net quarterly outflows on record in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to Morningstar. However, Nadig points out while financial advisors may have pulled back from recommending ESG funds to clients, investor interest hasn't gone anywhere.

The Scope 3 disclosure requirements have drawn strong criticism from many corporations, who claim the regulations are too burdensome. The climate disclosure rule was first proposed in March 2022. Since Congress has not passed major climate legislation for years, opponents of the SEC's climate rule will likely sue the SEC and cite West Virginia v. EPA, again arguing that Congress has not granted specific authority for the SEC to act on climate change. The disclosures required from the proposed SEC rule may shuffle the deck on companies that are considered "green" or "not so green." Arne Noack, manager of the Xtrackers S&P 500 ESG ETF and DWS Head of Systemic Investment Solutions for the Americas, will be the guest on ETF Edge at 1:10 p.m.

Exchange-traded fund experts anticipate spot bitcoin ETFs, which debuted this month, to spark a new wave of crypto products. Cboe Global Markets' Catherine Clay believes options are a natural progression for bitcoin ETFs. The Cboe, the largest U.S. options exchange, filed with the SEC on Jan. 5 to offer options linked to bitcoin exchange-traded products. "Folks who might not have been traditionally speculating on crypto directly in the crypto ecosystem are now going to have something to play with." "If what happens in bitcoin is what's happened in single stocks, we're going to see retail in particular and a lot of institutions move towards zero days to expiration options trading on bitcoin itself," he said.

Zero-day commodity options have now entered the ETF space

Investors can now trade commodities and a Treasury with a popular short-term options strategy. The Nasdaq recently launched five zero-day options-based exchange-traded funds: United States Oil Fund (USO) , United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) , SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) , iShares Silver Trust (SLV) and iShares 20+ year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) . It has taken the options market by storm. The surge in activity surrounding zero-day options has some analysts worried about a negative impact on the market. "I don't think the tools themselves are inherently breaking the market," Nadig said.

A look at single-stock ETFs one year in
  + stars: | 2023-08-19 | by ( Kevin Schmidt | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
GraniteShares rolled out its first batch of single-stock ETFs in August 2022 with products tracking mainstay names Tesla, Apple and Coinbase. While its 1.25x Long Tsla Daily ETF (TSL) and 1.75x Long AAPL Daily ETF (AAPB) have logged considerable gains in 2023, the Coinbase rally has pushed its 1.5x Long COIN Daily ETF (CONL) up 123% year to date. Because single-stock products are leveraged, Rhind said that the products lend themselves more to short-term activity and exposures. GraniteShares 1.5x Long NVDA Daily ETF (NVDL) has emerged as the outperformer of the firm's lineup, up more than 349% this year. Nadig added that investors can expect to see more single-stock ETFs coming to the market, but it's up to investor interest and market trends to ultimately bolster activity.

ETF experts Todd Sohn and VettaFi's Dave Nadig believe a second winning half is in store for technology and artificial intelligence plays. Sohn, Strategas' ETF and technical strategist, particularly likes Roundhill Generative AI and Technology ETF (CHAT). "What I like about [CHAT] is that it's actively managed," Sohn told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. Sohn also recommends Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ) for those interested in introducing more industrials into their portfolio. "I like [BOTZ] if you want to get away from tech because you already have tech exposure in your portfolio.

But the regulator still found the filings to lack clarity and comprehension, prompting BlackRock to refile last week. BlackRock first filed its application to launch the iShares Bitcoin Trust last month, with Fidelity following suit two weeks later. "However, if [the SEC] is trying to manufacture a way to approve a bitcoin ETF, this would be the way to do it. The filings come amid an ongoing legal battle between Grayscale and the SEC about converting its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) into an ETF. "But certainly, things look more positive than they did maybe three weeks ago, six weeks ago."

Despite a strong first half performance for the broad equity markets, ETF equity flows have been subpar this year. The big money has gone into Treasury ETFs and money market funds. First half inflows were subpar The first half ended with a modest acceleration of inflows into equity ETFs. Regardless, first half equity inflows were still well short of the prior years' first half activity. Join us Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. on ETF Edge for our second half ETF playbook.

As big-cap tech approaches new highs, some put more emphasis on equal weight. With more than $7 trillion indexed to the S & P 500, this is not an academic debate. With the S & P 500 up 8% this year, the average stock, as represented by the S & P Equal Weight ETF (RSP), is up a measly 0.5%. The RSP has underperformed the market-cap weighted S & P 500 month-to-date, quarter-to-date, and year-to-date. An argument could be made that active managers invest more like an equal-weight index.
"However, I don't think that means that we all of a sudden get a bitcoin ETF," he added. "I suspect that even if Grayscale wins, Gensler is going to back even further away from crypto," Nadig said. "Put some constraints around the futures-based products while we wait for comprehensive crypto regulation and legislation someday." "The point is, we need legislation," Nadig said. "I think we have to have legislation that realizes digital assets are different and need different sets of rules."
As short maturity Treasury bond ETFs see big inflows, more investors are taking on single-bond strategies as a solution to macroeconomic challenges. Buying Treasury bonds typically involves opening an account on TreasuryDirect or through brokerage firms like Charles Schwab. When seeking to invest in short-term Treasury bonds, Nadig advised looking for ETF products like this or a competitor's ETF products that offer similar kinds of exposure. On Friday, the 2 Year Treasury (US2Y) yield fell by more than 4 basis points to 4.86%, but returns have still increased 43 basis points this year. The 6 Month Treasury (US6M) currently holds the highest yield at 5.137% as of Friday's close.
And as yields on 2-year Treasurys approach 5%, single Treasury bond ETFs are attracting big inflows as investors seek balance in an uncertain inflationary environment. The 2-year Treasury yield closed the month of February on a tear, advancing more than 70 basis points for the month and climbing to 4.878% on Wednesday. The iShares Short Treasury Bond ETF (SHV) is comprised of securities with one to 12 months of remaining maturity. The SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF tracks between one and three years. Similarly, VettaFi's Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) focuses on exposure to bonds with that maturity duration.
She inquired about buying Treasury bonds directly, which she has never once inquired about in the past. Asking about putting all your money into bonds and chucking the stock market is like the shoeshine boy talking about stock market tips at the top of the stock market. Individuals can of course buy Treasury bonds directly from the U.S. government through TreasuryDirect. Similar products, such as the Schwab Short-Term U.S. Treasury ETF and the SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF, also have seen significant inflows in recent months. "ETFs for Treasurys are preferred by many, basically all because they trade like a stock," Morris told me.
I'm at the ETF Exchange Conference in Miami Beach, where 2,000 registered investment advisors and ETF providers have descended on the city for the industry's largest gathering. Think active, dividend, foreign debt and alternative income ETFs," Tom Lydon, of VettaFi, the conference sponsor, told me. "I believe fixed income ETFs are setup to have a historic year," Nate Geraci from the ETF Store said in January. This year, they're back, but despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors have yet to throw significant sums of money into the game. "Despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors are yet to start allocating again.
Tax-trimming strategies tailored for the ETF investor
  + stars: | 2022-12-07 | by ( Kevin Schmidt | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
For ETF investors bearing the brunt of a down market in 2022, tax-loss harvesting might offer a silver-lining opportunity to redeem some of this year's setbacks. The strategy allows investors to sell securities at a loss in order to offset those losses against capital gains taxes on other securities. Tierney, senior portfolio strategist at Schwab Asset Management Solutions, told Bob Pisani on CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. "You have this opportunity before the end of the year to sell that fund, realize the loss, [and] stay invested by buying an aggregate bond ETF," he said. Tierney said he is also perceiving levels of increased interest in the strategy among ETF investors, pointing to telltale signs among advisors and clients at Schwab.
It appears most ETF investors aren't cashing out of technology despite this year's painful losses. Invesco's Anna Paglia lists a reason: Investors are more loyal to the idea of growth than to the market's near-term swings. Yet many big volume ETFs including the Proshares Ultrapro QQQ , which tracks the Nasdaq 100 , are also holding on to investors. The short and leveraged QQQs in the ETF space have been "stalwarts for volume" ever since launching, according to Nadig. They're doing that because they're making a call in tech," the firm's financial futurist said.
Investors looking for yield are turning to exchange-traded funds that track senior bank loans, says a fund manager. One example is the Invesco Senior Loan ETF (BKLN) which follows the market-weighted performance of the 100 largest senior bank loans and has a yield of upward of 3.8%. Senior bank loans are debt securities issued by banks to corporations and they have what's called variable interest rates meaning they adjust periodically with the market. In the last year, the BKLN ETF has gone from steady outflows to strong inflows as investors' inflationary concerns have grown, Anna Paglia, global head of ETFs and indexed strategies at Invesco, told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. "Now it seems like clients are really looking at that yield story and this fund is the perfect vehicle for that," added Paglia, who oversees the BKLN ETF.
